Shot these portraits for a special section dedicated to 9/11. The paper had readers submit their own stories from not only that day, but also how that day affected their lives forever, and they chose a few to publish as is. Katelyn, who was 9 years old on 9/11, wrote a very personal piece about her brother who was killed by an IED in Iraq a few years ago. The pendant she wears around her neck has his ashes inside.

This kid just realized that Johnny Mountain Man was going to kill his new friend Frankie the Fish. Smells like campfire and childhood trauma.

I don’t know what it is about being around horses, maybe its the fact that they themselves are the icon of the “west,” but they always seem to make interesting photos. There seems to be something intrinsic about them, like they come with a historical cache. Like photographing them automatically includes something unexplainable, hidden within the frame; some old mythological context that we all share yet we have long forgot.

Rugged. Wild. Resilient.

The vehicle of exploration at a time when the country was largely unexplored. The original SUV. And after all of that, they are what we are: immigrants. Maybe that’s the shared thread. Humans and horses as immigrants discovering the “New World,” together. Maybe not so symbiotic. Maybe just a shared sense of respect and adoration.

I dunno, but they are beautiful.

Little girl

Last week I had an assignment to go shoot a new Baptist Church’s fundraising concert. I was sitting in the back row all by myself when this little girl walked up to me out of no where. She had these huge eys and this big smile. Her face was so expressive as she was interested in the pictures I was showing her on the back of the camera. Anyway, I couldn’t help but take a few frames of her.

Special Kids Rodeo

As part of the Pioneer Days festivities, they put on a rodeo for children with disabilities. It gives them a chance to take part in some of the festivities and also a chance to ride horses. Anyway, it was a nice event. Here are two frames I liked.
