So Julie and I, on a whim, drove through Monument Valley on our way to Taos, NM last weekend. We got there just as the sun was setting. Alas there was a huge cloud blocking the sun from hitting most of the landscape. Sure was pretty though.

This is from Cherry Hill two weeks ago. Story was about the waterpark getting a slow start to the season due to the unseasonably cold and rainy weather. The day I shot this it was cloudy and rainy.

Flood Water Rafting

A couple of weeks ago it seemed like almost every assignment was about flooding or had something to do with water in some way. This is the Weber River near Croyden, the rafters usually don’t portage their boats around it. They just go under it. A few days after this ran on A1, I was watching the NBA finals on KSL and they showed a teaser with their reporter on this bridge. The next teaser they showed was from another story that we shot a week before. Seems like KSL has been reading our newspaper a lot lately.

I don’t know what it is about being around horses, maybe its the fact that they themselves are the icon of the “west,” but they always seem to make interesting photos. There seems to be something intrinsic about them, like they come with a historical cache. Like photographing them automatically includes something unexplainable, hidden within the frame; some old mythological context that we all share yet we have long forgot.

Rugged. Wild. Resilient.

The vehicle of exploration at a time when the country was largely unexplored. The original SUV. And after all of that, they are what we are: immigrants. Maybe that’s the shared thread. Humans and horses as immigrants discovering the “New World,” together. Maybe not so symbiotic. Maybe just a shared sense of respect and adoration.

I dunno, but they are beautiful.
