Abused Horse

Yesterday I got a horrible, horrible assignment. Not because it was boring, cliche or a P.R. ruse from some local business. Not because there were no photos to be had or something else that plagues daily work. It was horrible for the simple fact that it reminded me of how cruel and totally fucked people can be. I have wondered this often, or rhetorically asked Julie, and likewise I have heard her ask the same question, “Why are people so fucked up?” How can they do the things they do to each other or animals? And how can they be so callous, so unaffected by their own lack of humanity or wanton disregard for life in general? How can they be so bloody cruel?

At this point you may be asking, “What is he on about now?”

Yesterday, one of the reporters and I went out to Clinton to meet with a 17 year old kid, named Giovanni, whose 2 year old racing quarter horse had been brutally attacked the previous morning. The horse was in its own stall among twelve other horses that Giovanni and his father own. Someone broke in and beat the shit out of their race horse. They then took a broken garden tool with a hook on the end and stabbed the horse in the ankle, ripping tendons and rendering the horse incapable of ever racing again. Giovanni said that the veterinarian could stick his finger all the way into the hole someone had torn into the flesh of the animal and feel for himself the torn ligaments and severed tendons.

So there you go people. Maybe you can answer this for me. “Why in the bloody hell are people so cruel, so fucked up?”

Chariot Racing

A wild, wild sport. First race that I shot, a chariot basically fell apart beneath the driver. I don’t know if he bailed out, or if he couldn’t hang on but he ate it hard at 45 mph. Ouch. He walked away relatively unscathed, save for a pretty good laceration on the bridge of his nose.

Among my axes to grind from my Utah State exerience the other day was the fact that there were hardly any places to shoot from. I got out there a few minutes before the game and all the choice spots were taken. The other photogs knew better to get out there early. It was a tough spot to shoot from but I thought the lights kinda worked in this frame. Oh well, lesson learned.

Foster Family

Here are a couple of photos from the other day. The top one ran in the paper (for obvious reasons) but I liked the bottom one the best. Anyway, the story was on the possibilty of cutting the state budgets for foster care. The Woman in the photo is the President of Utah Foster Family Association.

“Six Geese a Laying. . . ” (in the Sunshine)

Alright they are standing in the Sunshine. And there are seven of them. But what did you want this blog post to be titled, “Geese?” Nah. That is boring and this photo needs all the help it can get. This wasn’t for an assignment or anything but while I was at Weber State this morning walking back to my truck I saw these birds hanging out in the sun, snow and an empty parking stall in an otherwise full lot. They might have been there holding the spot for a friend. Anyway, it just caught my eye that’s all. As always, thank for looking.

F-16 Refueling Mission

So every time I go to update my blog I think to myself, “hey, I should post that refueling picture from last May that I still haven’t gotten around to posting.” And yet I always forget to do so. Anyway, here it is. My assignment was to go up in a KC-135 refueling plane and photograph and film the crew refueling F-16s mid-air. We were traveling at 500+ mph groundspeed at altitude when these F-16s which were training over the Nevada desert would fly in out of nowhere, attach to the plane I was in, refuel their tanks in a matter of minutes, detach, and zoom on past like we were standing still. It was all very impressive. The pilots even let me in the cockpit to film while they were landing. One of my assignments from yesterday was to photograph kids at recess playing outside even though the air quality here is downright awful. I have heard that it is the worst in the nation at the moment. The pollution in the air right now according to the air quality index is 142 (it is considered bad at 35). I saw these kids playing 4 square and it reminded me of some friends in Cali that would play this all the time. Thanks for looking,

Malan Falls

Went for a hike on my day off (Monday). I walked from my house up to the 29th Street trailhead and then to frozen Malan Falls. It was very beautiful and cold (at least I got away from the inversion for a little bit). A couple of guys were even climbing it. I want to go back at night and do some light painting there.
